How to clean a refrigerator properly

This guide covers ordinary crumbs, spills and sticky shelves. A food recall, prolonged power failure or appliance fault needs its own instructions, not just a more thorough wipe.

Set up before emptying the fridge

Have a cold place for the food before you start. Another working refrigerator is useful; otherwise, prepare an insulated cooler with ice packs. Health Canada recommends keeping the cooler at 4°C or below. An empty cooler without enough cooling is not a substitute for refrigeration.

Gather clean soft cloths, a dry towel, a basin and the cleaner allowed by your appliance manual. Clear a stable space for removable parts. Leave enough room to lay a glass shelf down without balancing it over other washing-up.

Read the model’s cleaning instructions for power, removable parts and materials first. Follow its shutdown procedure before a full interior clean. Do not pull a heavy fridge out just to reach a plug or guess which electrical circuit serves it.

Empty and remove parts carefully

Transfer perishables to cold storage and keep raw food sealed separately. Decide what to keep before the cleaning starts; a clean container does not tell you whether its contents are safe. Health Canada’s food safety guidance explains why smell and taste cannot settle that question.

Remove shelves, drawers and door bins according to the manual. If a piece resists, stop and check how it releases. Glass is not always designed to separate from its plastic frame. Samsung’s shelf and drawer guide illustrates why removal instructions vary by model.

Let cold glass reach room temperature before washing it in lukewarm water. Do not run hot water onto a shelf straight from the fridge or use force to free stuck glass.

Wash the parts and wipe the interior

For models that permit it, use mild dish soap diluted in water and a soft cloth. Hand-wash removable parts, rinse away the cleaner and dry them before refitting. Whirlpool’s refrigerator cleaning guide sets out this wash, rinse and dry sequence.

For the fixed interior, collect loose crumbs with a cloth, then wipe from the upper surfaces towards the bottom. Change to a clean cloth as it gets dirty. Clean the space under the drawers and the door-bin supports while they are accessible.

Use a damp cloth rather than flooding the lining. Keep liquid out of vents, seams and controls; apply cleaner to the cloth, not the electronics. Gently clean the accessible door-seal folds and dry them. Whirlpool’s interior care instructions explain these precautions and warn against abrasive or harsh cleaners on interior plastics and seals.

Do not turn a stubborn patch into an experiment with stronger products. Check the manual for an approved method instead of adding bleach, a scouring pad or another cleaner. Ordinary washing is not a promise that a contaminated appliance has been disinfected.

Dry and check before restocking

Refit the dry parts and restore power or cooling as directed. Keep perishables in cold storage until the refrigerator is at 4°C or below. Use a refrigerator thermometer to check rather than relying on how cool a shelf feels.

Return raw meat, poultry and seafood in sealed, leak-proof containers on the bottom shelf, separated from ready-to-eat food. Leave room for air to circulate. These storage points follow Health Canada’s guidance linked above.

Before closing the door, check that every shelf is seated, the bins are secure and nothing stops the door from shutting. This is a useful moment to put the food you intend to use next where you can see it.

Keep the next clean smaller

Wipe fresh spills promptly instead of waiting for a scheduled deep clean. When you notice a smell, look for the source and clean the affected area; fragrance does not remove a spill. For persistent smells, leaks or cooling problems after cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting advice.
