How to clean windows without streaks

If streaks remain, change the cloth or check the squeegee before adding more product. This guide is for safely reachable interior glass with ordinary household dirt, not exterior access, paint removal or damaged glazing.

Check the glass before choosing a cleaner

Window glass, applied films and coatings can have different care instructions. Check the window or film manufacturer's guidance rather than assuming one homemade mixture suits everything. For example, Andersen specifies mild soapy water for its HeatLock interior coating, even though other cleaners are allowed on some of its other products. See its glass and frame care guidance.

Use the directed dilution if your cleaner requires one. Do not add another chemical to make it stronger. Health Canada advises following product labels and never mixing household chemicals.

Check access too. If you cannot reach the pane comfortably from a safe position, leave it for an appropriately equipped professional. Do not lean through an opening or balance on furniture.

Prepare the frame and your tools

Move objects off the sill and protect nearby surfaces from drips. Remove loose dust from the frame, sill and accessible track with a soft brush or vacuum attachment. Follow the frame's care instructions for any damp cleaning; avoid pooling water around wood, hardware or seals.

Set out separate cloths for dirty surrounding surfaces, washing the glass and final drying. A cloth already used on greasy kitchen surfaces is a poor starting point for a clear finish. Choose lint-free cloths and replace them when they become dirty or too damp to finish the pane.

For a larger clear pane, a clean squeegee is another option. Inspect its edge before starting. Grit, damage or dried residue can interfere with an even pass.

Wash and finish one pane

Start with a small pane so you can check your cleaner and technique before repeating them across the room. Work out of direct sun; liquid that dries before you remove it can leave marks.

With cloths

Apply the approved cleaner to your washing cloth as directed and work from the top down. Use a fresh dry cloth to remove the remaining liquid. Pella's window-cleaning guide explains this two-cloth approach and why applying cleaner to the cloth helps protect the surrounding frame.

Turn to a clean section as you work. If the drying cloth is leaving damp trails, change it rather than continuing to polish with it.

With a squeegee

Wash the pane using the approved solution and a soft tool, then draw the clean squeegee down the wet glass. Work across the pane in overlapping passes and wipe the blade between passes. Catch the runoff, then dry the perimeter and sill with a separate cloth.

Check the finished pane from an angle in daylight. Choose a time when you can see the marks without working on hot, sunlit glass. Once the first pane dries clearly, continue with the same method.

Fix the mark you can see

These are useful first checks, not a diagnosis of every glass defect. Change one thing and retry a small area before recleaning the whole window.

• Broad haze or smears: try a fresh cloth and remove the remaining cleaner. Check the product dilution rather than adding more.
• Lines following the squeegee: clean and inspect the blade, then repeat with overlapping passes. Replace a damaged edge.
• Marks appearing as the liquid dries: move to a cooler pane or smaller working area so you can finish before the solution dries.
• Drips returning from the border: dry the edge and sill, and check whether the surrounding frame is feeding water back onto the glass.

If an unchanged mark remains after ordinary cleaning, stop scrubbing harder. Mineral deposits, scratches, coatings and marks on another surface need different attention. Ask the window manufacturer for the appropriate next step rather than experimenting with a blade or abrasive pad.
